One of the most common infections there is
Almost every second woman has a bladder infection at least once in her life. The symptoms are clear and unpleasant: burning when passing water, a constant urge to go, often only a few drops, sometimes a pulling pain in the lower abdomen.
In healthy women without other risk factors, this is usually an uncomplicated bladder infection. That does not necessarily need a doctor’s appointment, and that is exactly what the test at the pharmacy is for.
What the test shows, and what it does not
The test strip shows whether there are white blood cells, nitrite or blood in the urine. Together with your symptoms, that gives a clear picture of whether a bladder infection is likely.
What the strip cannot do is identify the exact pathogen. That needs a urine culture in a laboratory. It is necessary if the infection keeps coming back or does not clear after treatment. In that case we send you to a doctor.
When it is no longer a simple bladder infection
Fever, chills or pain in your side can mean the infection has reached the kidneys. That needs a doctor the same day, and outside practice hours the emergency department.

Frequently asked questions about bladder infections
Do I need to bring a urine sample?
No, you can give it here. Urine that has been in the bladder for a few hours is the most telling, so ideally do not come straight after going to the toilet.
Can I get an antibiotic from you?
That depends on the conversation and the test. For an uncomplicated bladder infection in women, we can often dispense the treatment directly. For anything else the decision belongs with a doctor, and we tell you so.
When do I need to see a doctor?
With fever, pain in the side or back, blood in the urine, during pregnancy, for men and children, with diabetes, and if you get a bladder infection more than three times a year. Then it is no longer a simple bladder infection.
What can I do myself?
Drink plenty so that the bladder is flushed, and keep your lower abdomen warm. That does not replace treatment if it is not better after one or two days.
