Wound care in Cham: what we are allowed to treat

A pharmacy is not an emergency department, and that is not modesty but a limit. Within that limit more is possible than most people think: the grazed patch after a fall, the dressing that has soaked through after three days, the plaster that never stays on your heel.

We treat you sitting down in the consulting room, with good light and without an audience. You leave again with the material for the next few days. If you are unsure whether a wound is one for us, come anyway: the assessment takes two minutes and costs nothing.

When you are better off going to the practice

These belong with a doctor: deep or gaping wounds. Wounds that bleed heavily. Bite wounds. Wounds on the face. Wounds with a foreign body in them. And any wound that becomes infected. This is how you recognise it: the redness spreads, the spot swells and feels warm, you develop a fever. With diabetes or impaired wound healing we also look earlier and send you on earlier.

The point almost everyone forgets

With every wound that goes deeper than a graze, the question of tetanus protection arises. In adults a booster is recommended every twenty years, and from the age of 65 every ten – after an injury shorter intervals apply, and hardly anyone knows when theirs was last due.

So bring your vaccination record if you can find it. We will check in two minutes, and if it has expired we can give a booster directly – you need no doctor’s appointment for that.
