Cardiovascular risk assessment in Cham

What is included

What we look at

Measurements and a conversation. At the end you get an assessment, not a list of numbers.

Blood pressureMeasured after a rest. If you measure at home, bring your readings, they say more than a single measurement.
CholesterolTotal cholesterol, the favourable HDL and the unfavourable LDL. For your risk, the ratio matters most.
Blood sugarThe long-term HbA1c value shows what your blood sugar was over the last two to three months. You do not need to fast for it.
ConversationSmoking, exercise, weight, cases in the family. Together with the readings, that gives your personal risk.

Why the sum matters

Cardiovascular disease is the most common cause of death in Switzerland. Most of the risk factors cannot be felt: high blood pressure does not hurt, nor does high cholesterol, and raised blood sugar causes no symptoms for a long time.

Each value on its own may be just within range. Together, and with smoking or little exercise on top, the picture looks different. That is why the cardiovascular check does not look at single numbers but at the whole.

What you take home

You go home with your readings on a printout and a clear statement of where you stand. If everything is within range, we say so. If something stands out, we discuss what you can do yourself and whether you should take it to your GP.

How to measure your blood pressure correctly at home is explained in the guide on high blood pressure. Single values without an appointment are measured at the health check.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions about the cardiovascular check

How is this different from the health check?

At the health check we measure single values without an appointment. The cardiovascular check brings those values together with your lifestyle and ends with an assessment of your risk. That takes more time and an appointment.

Who is the check worth it for?

For everyone from about 40, earlier if there has been a heart attack or stroke in the family, with excess weight, diabetes or if you smoke.

Do I need to fast?

Not for the long-term blood sugar. For an accurate cholesterol value it is better not to eat for eight hours beforehand. We will tell you when you book.

Does it replace a visit to the doctor?

No. The check shows whether a visit to the doctor makes sense, and you arrive there well prepared with your readings. We do not make a diagnosis.
